This is an editorial from The Sunday Paper. I think it hits thing right on the head. As I was reading this. I thought. Is this really true. On some thing. But try to buy an avocado In winter up here and see the 3.00 dollar EACH price tag. Bieng this remote is amazing. But there is always a price.People need to see the need to reduce there global footprint. Please especially pay attention to what I highlighted in the editorial.- Love The Big J Kahuna

Price increases a relief?
Compared with oil’s rise, food is still relatively cheap

Published Sunday, August 31, 2008

Given the degree to which our economy depends upon phenomenally expensive petroleum, recent news articles about modest food price increases actually seem like good news.

The production and distribution of our modern American diet is so entwined with the need for oil and gas that it is easy to imagine food prices rising in close concert with petroleum. A barrel of oil this month is more than 10 times as expensive as it was a decade ago.

During that decade, a week’s worth of basic nutritious food for a family of four in Fairbanks has risen from almost exactly $100 to $126.

That’s a 26 percent increase. The difference in the price of a barrel of oil is more than 1,000 percent. No one wants to ponder what would happen here if food prices went up by even a fraction of the rise we’ve seen in oil.

But oil is used to carry so much of that food — from places all across the earth to our dinner tables — that it seems logical and unavoidable that such a fractional increase will occur at some point unless petroleum prices drop significantly. The links between our plates and petroleum are even deeper than the transportation system. Many pesticides and herbicides require petrochemical base ingredients derived from oil. Modern farm equipment can’t move without oil. Natural gas, which hasn’t gone as crazy as oil in terms of price, provides the basic feedstock for much of the nation’s agricultural fertilizer.

In fact, economists are expecting this link to start showing up more in food prices. Federal forecasters say prices will rise 5-6 percent this year and another 4-5 percent next year.

That’s a far cry from 1,000 percent, fortunately, but it seems a safe bet to assume greater impacts are coming.

Decades ago, before the creation of modern, efficient transportation systems, Alaskans paid a premium for food carried from the Lower 48. As recently as the 1960s and ’70s, that meant many of us went without fresh meat, fresh milk, fresh eggs, fresh fruit. Unless it was dried or canned, it didn’t make the shopping list if it had to come from Outside.

At the same time, we were more self-sufficient. Gardens were not just for aesthetics — they were essential for healthy living. People hunted and fished more. Small farms surrounded Fairbanks.

In the past 50 years, our expectations and lifestyles changed greatly. Today, Fairbanks, on the far northern end of the nation’s roads, rails and barges, has more products available for prices quite similar to the Lower 48. As life here has changed, we have barely seemed to pay for the differences on a relative scale. We soon may see that change, absent any shift in worldwide petroleum prices.

Its Green Its Blue Its Grandma Sue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are excited that Grandma Sue Will be here This Friday. So much to do. Days are shorter. 33 degrees this morning. We should see snow within the month.

Life this week

We have had lots going here this past week.

Well last monday there was tons of craziness at work due to President Bush's visit and speech on his way to the Olympic Games. We had to stay at work so we couldn't attend the speech, but we had lots of fun watching Air Force One, it was on the tarmac on the other side of the street for our parking lot. But so cool to see and so HUGE.

We have been having fun watching the Olympics together as a family.Swimming and Gymnastics has been the favs. That US Swimming team is something, especially Phelps.

Syd told me that she not only wants Gymnastics lessons, but has added swimming lessons to that list. So we will have to see what we can do there. One at a time most likely.

But the biggest news of all is my new job. I still work at Eielson Air Force Base in the dining hall, but am know officially the Night Shift Supervisor. So I will now be working 8pm to 5 am. But salaried ( the steady paycheck will be awesome) and have my medical paid in full. Still will have to pay for the rest of the family. But we haven't had coverage in 3 years so that will be good. And the job has other good benefits as well.

We are also purchasing a pickup this friday. It's 25 years old, but has less miles than our SUV which is a 2004. We have only had 1 car for 3 years now. So it will be nice for us to each have our own to drive. And no longer have to take each other to work when we need the car. The car mine and the truck his. We are getting a camper top with it. It's big enough to sleep all of us and in decent shape.Which will get well used in future hunting and fishing trips.

I also got pulled over for the first( a shock I know as I tend to have a lead foot)
while driving on base on my way to work. My headlight has been acting up and was out, but they thankfully only gave me a warning. Tickets on base get way more survive than others, and I have been told once you get either 2 or 3 you ability to drive on base gets suspended for at least a month. That would make it tough to get to work. You can't talk on cellphones while driving on base either.

And then to top it all off as we were watching the Olympics this evening I heard Syd scream. So I go to the window and there they were about 8 feet from our living room window, 3 moose. 3!!! One was huge and 2 smaller. And of course the window was messing up the flash on my camera. So we went outside and it was just dark enough that my pictures wouldn't come out. So the girls and I stood and watched them for a few minutes as they slowly walked across our street, eating leaves and stopping to stare at us every few moments. It was so cool.

On another note we have been renting alot of movies lately.Due to our busy schedules, cost of gas (paid 4.36 a gallon yesterday), lack of cable, and recent trip we have been spending our time with regular trips to Blockbuster.Anywho, some we have enjoyed lately include: The Missing, Reign Over Me, Fool's Gold, I Now Pronouce You Chuck and Larry and The Bucket List.

Well,I guess that concludes my novel for now.

May God Bless You, Jess

Wow, 6 years?!

Today Jason and I celebrate 6 years of marriage together. It's almost hard to believe. The combination of the fact I have now been with Jason for 8 1/2 years and the fact that my 10 year reunion was the weekend( which I of course didn't go to.. I didn't like most of those people then, why I would I like them more now) has made me feel old. But not really in a bad way, just weird. Yes I know I am only 28. And not actually old.

Anyway, Happy Anniversary Jason. You're Awesome and I love You!

Paid Twice

So as I was looking at stimulus related stuff online last night I stumbled onto this blog titled:I’ve Paid For This Twice Already…

The addy is: http://www.paidtwice.com/

I found it quite interesting. So much in fact I added it to my Google Reader list. (Thanks MOM, I am really enjoying the reader)

Anyway, it's by a 30-something Mom with 2 little kids and is about her families endeavour to decrease their so they just have a mortgage payment. Well we haven't had a credit card since September of 2005. AND VOW TO NEVER HAVE ANOTHER AS LONG AS WE LIVE. But still have other debts to pay and a painful car loan. In 2 and half years of large payments it would be nice to have it a lot further paid then it is. With the goal of also building our own log home. And new furniture for it would be nice too.

So I found her blog interesting and helpful. So I thought I would share.

On a weather note, the storm I had been hearing about seemed to arrive as it has been snowing all day. With snow in the forecast for the next few days. So much for break-up.

Yummy

We found this recipe for No-Bake Cookies recently. We liked it so much we have made it twice now.

Here is the link: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/No-Bake-Cookies-I/Detail.aspx?strb=3

And also the recipe below:

INGREDIENTS
1 3/4 cups white sugar
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup butter
4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter
3 cups quick-cooking oats
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS
In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, milk, butter, and cocoa. Bring to a boil, and cook for 1 1/2 minutes. Remove from heat, and stir in peanut butter, oats, and vanilla. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto wax paper. Let cool until hardened.

A tip posted by the submitter of the recipe:"Tasty no-bake cookies made with oatmeal, peanut butter and cocoa. Start timing when mixture reaches a full rolling boil; this is the trick to successful cookies. If you boil too long the cookies will be dry and crumbly. If you don't boil long enough, the cookies won't form properly."

One of the many reasons why I don't like watching the news

I saw this story on Yahoo tonight courtesy of the Associated Press and it reminded me of why I find myself watching/reading less news these days. So much of it is so painful to see on so many levels. Here is the story:

Pa. girl hit with game controller dies

Associated Press

YORK, Pa. - A 2-year-old girl died after being beaten with a video game controller by her mother's boyfriend, police said Tuesday. Darisabel Baez's mother overheard the beating Sunday but did nothing until she realized the girl was unconscious, police said.

The girl was pronounced dead late Monday at Hershey Medical Center, police Lt. Ron Camacho said.

Homicide was added to the list of charges against Harve L. Johnson on Tuesday; he was already in jail on counts including aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.

The girl's mother, Neida E. Baez, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

It was clear from the bruises and other injuries on the little girl's body that Sunday was not the first time she had been abused, Dauphin County coroner Graham Hetrick told WGAL-TV. He said it was one of the worst cases of child abuse he has ever seen.

Baez, 19, called for an ambulance Sunday and said Johnson had brought the unconscious child to her, limp and wet from an attempt to revive her in a bathtub, a police affidavit said.

Johnson, 26, acknowledged beating the girl with a video game controller but did not say why, police said. Baez said Johnson had abused the girl in the past and that she heard the girl scream after Johnson beat her Sunday, according to the affidavit.

Detective Dana Ward said Baez was charged because she did not intervene or try to get help for Darisabel.

Johnson and Baez remained in custody Tuesday. His bail was set at $200,000; hers was $25,000.

Through police, family members declined requests for interviews Tuesday. Court officials said they did not know whether Johnson and Baez had lawyers to speak for them.

Alaska-versary

Alaska-versary, that is what we call April 5th in this household.

Yes, that's right folks we have made it a full year! Believe it or not it has been a full 365 days since we arrived here in the Great White North, after an extremely long 5 day trek of 2600 miles.

We have survived our first winter, we are in full fledged BREAK-UP (The term for the nasty sandy, muddy, snow and wet mess that ensues after 6 months (yes 6 months of a few feet of compacted snow and ice on the ground). Although we did get a light dusty of snow today.

Oh, how our lives have changed. In so many ways I can't even begin to describe here, so I won't other then to say, that I am not the same woman today, that I was when I left Washington.

Hopefully a change for the better.

I was almost in tears to see the Washington Licence plates in our entry way and no longer on the truck. I have so long identified my self as being a Washingtonian, that it is almost painful to identify my self as anything else. I have noticed few people describe themselves as being "Alaskan".They all seem to have come from some other state. I think that might have to due with such a huge military population( at least here in our area with our 2 bases). It's a state of less then 700,000 people, but yet TWICE the size of Texas.

So unique. So different. So Alaska.

Much Love to all, Jessica

Real Alaskan News

Board preserves Nelchina subsistence caribou hunt
CARIBOU: Fish and game board denies Mat-Su residents' proposal to get rid of Tier II permits and expand the harvest.
By JAMES HALPINjhalpin@adn.com
Published: October 9, 2007 Last Modified: October 9, 2007 at 06:47 PM
A proposal that had many rural Alaskans outraged at a perceived attack on their hunting rights failed to pass muster at a state board meeting Monday.

The Alaska Joint Board of Fisheries and Game decided by a thin margin to kill a proposal to open a swath of land south of the Alaska Range, where the Nelchina caribou herd roams, to more hunters.
By killing the proposal, the board kept one of only a few road-accessible caribou herds in the state off-limits to those ineligible for so-called Tier II subsistence permits.
"I see people concerned because they feel like their birthright is being ripped out from underneath them," said Game Board Chairman Cliff Judkins, who supported the proposal.
The proposal came from Mat-Su residents who advise the boards. They pitched the idea as a fix for the legally troubled system for dividing the popular caribou harvest.
The years-old debate focuses on whether some hunters are being treated fairly because they don't qualify for the same hunts as other Alaskans.
All Alaskans are considered subsistence hunters under state law. When demand for a resource is particularly high, the state can limit access to Tier II hunters, who are chosen under point systems that consider such factors as place of residence, cost of living and alternative resources.
The Nelchina caribou fall under a Tier II hunt.
Thousands of the Nelchina caribou are killed each year in the area covered by the proposal, though only about 13 percent of successful hunters live in the Copper River basin, on the eastern side of the hunt area, according to Department of Fish and Game numbers presented at the meeting.
"Why is it likely to benefit current nonsubsistence users and hurt subsistence users?" asked Game Board member Ben Grussendorf, who opposed the proposal. "That should get one to start thinking pretty seriously about what our duty is by law."
The state's permit system has been the subject of controversy for years.
To assuage the complaints in 2005, the board considered a similar proposal that would have opened the easy-access hunt for everyone, though with a few catches.
People who signed up for the hunt wouldn't be allowed hunt or trap anywhere else in Alaska. They would have had to salvage every scrap of meat, and couldn't use certain motorized vehicles -- including airplanes, RVs and some ATVs -- during their hunts.
That proposal failed, and today applicants receive points based on their responses to questions including how much food and gas cost in their towns, how many days they fished or hunted during the previous year and the number of years they have hunted the animal.
Last year, the state added income level to the requirements for drawing a permit to hunt in the Copper River area, though that condition is being challenged in court.
The land in question is located between the Parks, Glenn and Richardson highways. That its borders are roadways where people live was also of concern to opponents.
"It's just too extreme to advance," Grussendorf said.
The process of changing the regulations has already dragged on for years, Grussendorf said, "and all we've done is make people more and more upset with us."
Much of the Copper River basin traditionally belonged to the Ahtna Athabascans, though only about 25 percent of the residents there were Natives in 2000, according to Department of Fish and Game statistics that were presented.
"There will always be a certain number of residents in these communities that are going to be completely dependent on subsistence hunting," said board member Paul Johnson.
Last year, 3,740 people stalked the Nelchina herd, with 277 of them from the Copper River basin. In previous years, as many as 13,000 have hunted the herd, and the number of basin residents involved has always been a fraction of the total.
Ending the Tier II hunting simply won't solve the problem, Johnson said, because subsistence lifestyles are the norm in rural Alaska, even if the residents live on the road system.
The basin had a population of about 3,362 in 2006, and many of those people rely on a mixed subsistence-cash economy, according to the report. Year-round employment is the exception.
"It's a dire need for us," said Wilbur Joe, who attended the meeting to represent his village of Kluti-kaah. "We were all holding our breaths. It's a serious matter for us; our subsistence is our lifestyle."
In 1999, 52 percent of adults in the basin were not working, and 16 percent were unemployed, according to the report. More than a third of the households made less than $25,000 a year.
And surveys conducted during the past 20 years have shown more than 90 percent of basin households harvest and use wildlife for personal use, the report said.
"I don't think another year is going to produce some new information that's going to change anything," said member Vince Webster.

We got snow.

Boy did we get some snow. It warmed up here. To about 10 above actually.( Yes that is considered warm around here, this time of year) And we woke up to about 8 inches of snow thursday morning.

It's funny too, that here when discussing the temperature it's ALWAYS described as above or below. Such as right now it's 9 above zero so it's " 9 above". Because it really does get cold such as 42 below( which we have felt twice so far). I just thought that little fact was interesting.

I hope to have some snow pictures up soon. Anyway, here's the story:

(Published By the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner)

Biggest snowfall in years blankets Fairbanks
By Tim MowryStaff WriterPublished January 18, 2008

Fairbanks dog musher Shannon Erhart went to sleep Wednesday night hoping the National Weather Service’s forecast for an inch or two of new snow overnight would be right.
She wasn’t disappointed to wake up Thursday and find out they were wrong.
“I woke up quite happy this morning; I think all dog mushers in the Interior did,” said Erhart, who serves as president of the Alaska Dog Mushers Association. “This should fill in all the dips (in the trails).”
Residents awoke Thursday to find 8 to 10 inches of new snow on the ground. It was the biggest single snowfall in Fairbanks in several years and ended what so far this winter has equated to a snow drought in Alaska’s second-largest city.
The heavy snow came as a surprise to residents as well as meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Fairbanks.
“We were not expecting that kind of snow to develop,” meteorologist Bob Fischer said.
A cold front stalled over Fairbanks and mixed with an unstable air mass aloft to produce what Fischer called a “very localized” snowfall. The snow fell over such a small area — within about a 50-mile radius of Fairbanks — that it was practically impossible to predict.
“Smaller scale things like this the models aren’t able to pick up,” he said. “The resolution is just not there.”
Not that Erhart and other outdoor types who prefer ample quantities of snow were complaining. Prior to the overnight dump, only 23.2 inches of snow had fallen in Fairbanks, which is half the normal snowfall for the season.
“This will be pretty sweet,” said Scott Chesney, president of the Two Rivers Dog Mushers Association.
The snow fell just in time for a 100-mile race the club is holding this weekend and should make things easier on both dogs and mushers, given the rough trail conditions that have prevailed up to now.
“This will help a lot,” he said. “Everybody won’t be getting slammed around now.”
The National Weather Service did not have an exact measurement on the snowfall because the official measurement is taken at Fairbanks International Airport at midnight, but Fischer said most reports around town put the total at about 8 inches. Snow started falling around 9 p.m. Wednesday, and 3.5 inches had fallen at the airport by midnight. The rest fell between midnight and 9 a.m.
“An 8-inch snowfall in Fairbanks is about a once in 10-year event,” said Fischer. “Even a 4-incher is a big one by Fairbanks standards. Most of our snow comes down in 1- and 2-inch trickles.”
The last time Fairbanks had that much snow in one dump was two years ago on Feb. 25-26 when 8.7 inches of snow fell, said meteorologist Mike Richmond. But that snowfall occurred over the course of two full days, while Wednesday night’s dump all came within 12 hours.
“For a single event for 12 hours or less I would say this is the heaviest dump we’ve had in several years,” said Richmond, who was looking forward to hitting the ski trails on his day off Friday.
The weather service tracks snowfall by calendar day, from midnight to midnight. The 8 to 10 inches of snow that fell overnight in Fairbanks Wednesday will go down as a two-day snowfall, Fischer said.
The record one-day snowfall in Fairbanks is 16.0 inches on Feb. 11, 1966, the first of three straight days of heavy snow in Fairbanks that year. Another 10.9 inches fell on Feb. 12 that year for a record two-day total of 26.9 inches, and 7.7 inches fell on Feb. 13 for a three-day record total of 34.6 inches of snow.
The second heaviest one-day snowfall in Fairbanks was 15.5 inches on Jan. 19, 1937. Another 10.5 inches fell on Jan. 20 for a two-day total of 26.0 inches, which ranks second on the list of heaviest two-day snowfalls.
Crews from the state Department of Transportation and city public works department were scrambling to clear the main roads around Fairbanks before the end of the work day Thursday, according to Dan Schacher, acting Fairbanks district superintendent for DOT’s northern region.
“We’re not doing anything except getting roads open,” he said. “We’re trying to make it safe so we don’t have those big two-foot berms in the middle of the road.”
City crews were “coping with it the best we can with the resources we have,” said Kevin Fitzgerald at the public works department on Thursday morning. The city had ceased snow removal operations and was focusing on getting main streets cleared, he said.
“We have teams of graders scattered throughout town trying to open up the main arterials first,” Fitzgerald said. “From there we move into residential areas.”
Fitzgerald asked residents to be patient and not to put snow from their driveways into the streets. Doing so is illegal.
Downhill ski area operators were happy to see the snow. Until now, slopes have had grass and brush sticking up through the snow. Only 4 to 6 inches of snow fell at Mount Aurora Skiland on Cleary Summit about 20 miles north of Fairbanks, but Brenda Birdsall said it will improve conditions greatly.
“This is beautiful,” she said. “I wish we were open today.”
Moose Mountain Ski Resort owner Roger Evans, meanwhile, was skiing in Snow Basin, Utah, and wishing he was back in Fairbanks.
“Below zero, windy and no new snow,” is how Evans described conditions in Utah. “It sounds like Fairbanks is going to have a better weekend than Utah.”
Even though winter is half over, snowmachine shops around town are hoping the snow will help spur what have been slow sales so far this winter.
“This is what we needed in the fall,” said Bill Larry at Alaska Fun Center on College Road.
On Thursday, customers seemed to be more interested in snow-removal equipment than snowmachines, Larry said.
“I’ve had some guys come in for plows for four-wheelers,” he said. “They were hoping they could get away without buying one until today.”
The same was true at Northern Power Sports on Van Horn Road.
“We had a guy waiting at the door this morning who wanted a four-wheeler with a plow,” said David Baldwin, a salesman at Northern Power Sports. “We’ve sold lots of (four-wheeler) plows already this morning.”
The snow is a lot better for business than the 40 degree below temperatures earlier this week, Baldwin said.
“People come in when it snows; when it’s 40 below, nobody comes in the store,” he said.
The forecast wasn’t calling for more significant snowfall until possibly early next week.

Colder than a Witches Boob in a Brass Brazier

That statement is severly underestimated.

= 30 f for the last three days.

Most or the United states coldest Temperatures are what we call "Unseasonably Warm".

This is a thinking mans or womens cold. You have to think before you go out in this cold. Trailblazer Barely started this morning. I got my first feeling of frostbite just trying to plug the truck in. Exposure in real. Believe it or not we still saw people out in shorts and and No Jackets. Can we say stupid. People need to rethink there ways.

Fortunatly we have not succumed to the stupidity. Beanies and Hat and ski bib and Jackets on.

But in all this we are staying warm and cozy in our little apartment. Jess had a Good bout of food poisoning from a restaurant up in Fairbanks. So we spent the day taking care of Mommy. We are getting ready for Christmas.

Peace and Joy to you all

Wolf pack strikes again in Two Rivers
By Tim Mowry
Staff Writer
Published December 6, 2007

A wolf pack that has been commuting between North Pole and Two Rivers for the past month, eating pet dogs as they go, has apparently struck again, this time at 16.5 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road.

Long-time Two Rivers resident Bill Blizzard said he discovered his 11-year-old Labrador/Chesapeake Bay retriever mix, Chesie, missing at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when he went out to feed his three dogs chained up about 200 feet from his home.

“All there was was a couple chunks of collar sitting on top of three or four pieces of intestine,” said Blizzard of what remained of his 70-pound pet. “Everything is gone. It looks like they ate her right there.”

He isn’t sure when the wolves struck but suspects it was early Tuesday morning.

“I think they hit around 6 a.m. (Tuesday) because my neighbor said her dogs went off around 6 a.m.,” Blizzard said.

Chesie’s two siblings, Buster and Banjo, who were chained up in the same area, weren’t touched and gave no warning wolves were in the yard.

“They didn’t make a sound,” Blizzard said. “How do they eat a dog with two other dogs in the yard and you don’t hear nothing? That’s how quiet they were.”

State wildlife officials with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game suspect its the same pack of wolves that have been roaming the area for more than a month and have killed and eaten at least two other dogs, one at 19.5 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road on Nov. 23 and one in North Pole on Oct. 31. The wolves have also been spotted several times by residents living along the first 20 miles of Chena Hot Springs Road.

After hearing of reports about the wolves in the area, Blizzard said he was laying in wait for the wolves when they evidently struck.

“I was laying next to the door with my 18-inch barrel Mossberg with a flashlight and my bunny boots; I was ready,” said Blizzard, a former dog musher who has lived in Two Rivers for more than 30 years. “The wind was blowing, and I didn’t hear nothing.”

Blizzard reported the incident to the Department of Fish and Game but spokeswoman Cathie Harms said at this point there isn’t much the department can do because the wolves are gone by the time anyone gets there and they don’t know where they will strike next.

“The chances of us being in the right place at the right time in the hundreds of square miles this wolf pack roams is near impossible,” Harms. said. “The people that are going to have a chance to take action are the people that live there.”

The department is trying to work with trappers to catch the wolves but that’s tough to do in a residential area where loose dogs can also be caught in traps, she said.

There is a rumor that a trapper in Two Rivers caught or shot three wolves in the area but department officials have not been able to confirm that, Harms said.

State wildlife officials initially thought there were five or six wolves in the pack, but no more than three wolves have been seen at a time, Harms noted.

Even if they were able to find and tranquilize the wolves, which is unlikely, Harms said relocating them is not an option.

“We don’t have any place to move them,” she said. “Our only option would be shoot them.”

So far, the wolves have carried out their attacks on dogs under the cover of darkness and have not approached people, Harms said.

“Every report so far indicates these wolves are pretty leery of people,” she said.

Harms advised residents to take precautions by keeping their pets in a fenced-in area or inside a house or building. Even plastic fencing like the orange mesh used at construction sites might keep wolves away, she said. Another possibility is stringing rope around your yard with rags attached that can flap in the wind. Soaking the rags in something with a strong scent, such as Chlorox, ammonia or urine isn’t a bad idea, either, she said.

“Something that holds a scent for a long time,” Harms said.

Weather

Well, It is getting cold here. It's either -11 or -14 depending on where you look. I am in the process of adding a weather widget on here. But haven't quite figured out how. So here is a link to the Artic Cam as well :http://arcticcam.com/cam/
We haven't had any new snow for a while. But the old stuff has never left. Most of the main roads are clear though. The rest are a nice ice rink at this point. And did you know that we can't use salt on the roads here, because it gets too cold for it to work? I didn't even know that was possible. So there is sand and small gravel used instead. That's all for know folks!

I know it's early but, Merry Christmas! With Love, Jessica

I know I am a Dork,..or would Redneck be more fitting????

Okay, SO maybe I am a dork or a Redneck. I don't really know exactly what to call it or I guess me.......

For weeks now Jason has been trying to fiqure out the perfect Christmas gift for me.But has been having trouble.(This seems to happen every year) He asks me and I end up listing off things for him, the kids, the truck or our little apartment.Very few things for me , just me. The one thing I can think of that would be just for me would be a nice, rather big diamond ring. My dream ring. Somehow I don't see that happening anytime in, like the next 5 years. Spending 2 grand on a diamond ring not really logical at this point in our lives.Surely not worth going in debt for.

So, we had been out doing some shopping at Fred Meyer's for groceries and some Christmas presents.(We picked a good time to leave, it was about 5:30pm and starting to get insane there) After some of our daily errands. And decided to stop at Frontier Outfitters on our way home looking for ideas on a good jacket for me.(I want something nice and feminine and warm, very warm....not the ones I currently have that are well mens, mens coats seem to be the only ones out there to fit me correctly or be in my price range. But I look well, Butch for lack of a better word)

Okay, back to my story. No luck. But for a few months now we , especially Jason, have been looking for the perfect rifle for me. Something I can take a moose, bear, caribou...whatever, down with and still handle. Not too heavy, too much recoil, etc. All the ones we have now are well his. And mostly too powerful for me.(Women hunting up here, suprisingly common. And I have always enjoyed target shooting.)

We had been going to all our local stores, the many outfitters up here, sporting goods stores, (EVEN FRED MEYER AND WAL-MART sell rifles and hand guns up here) looking at them, holding them, talking to many people. A woman from work even let me take hers out to the range to try it out.One she had taken a moose with.( I have mainly shot pistols in the past.) So we had a good idea what I/we wanted.

We had seen it there before a Ruger 44 Magnum lever action. http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAProdView?model=6301

And the down payment for the lay-a-way plan was in the price range we had planned. So I filled out the necessary paperwork.(This will be our first rifle in my name). Made the down payment. And that's my Christmas present from the family. In a few short months she's all mine. This rifle is a joint Christmas present for me and Jason. So I will let Jason use it of course. No really, I will. Anyhow Jason plans to buy a Rifle for himself with some of our Tax return. 30-06 or 270 I think.

I have never been so excited before over something like this. It is really rather scary. Seriously scary. So what does that make me? A dork, a redneck or something totally different entirely?

With Love to all, Jess

Thankgiving and Sausage Making

Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving to Mom and Jerry, Dad and Sharon, Rob, Ken and Mhari,Mom and Craig,Dad and the rest of our extended family. To all are friends. Peace and Love to you.

Moose has become a new house favorite. We have eaten more moose than I thought we would eat the first year here. Moose is a very easy game meat to work with. We have done Moose Meatloaf (Super yummy) to Chicken fried moose steaks to Green Chili with Moose. So making sausage was pretty logical. Made two batches stuffed in Casing and all. One was my Chorizo Recipe.

8 Ancho Chiles soaked in water
1 Medium Onion
12 Cloves of garlic
1 Tablespoon Curing Salt
1 Tablespoon Groung Black Pepper
1 Pound Ground pork
1 Pound Bacon
7 Pounds of Moose

Grind Vegatables all together. Grind Bacon and Brunoise(1/8 Dice) the Moose. Stuff in Hog Casing. No Casing? Grind all the meat and just Bag up and Freeze. No Moose? Use Venison, Lamb, Beef or Pork. ALL YUMMY.

The other was a REALLY HOT Andoullie Sausage
Same Recipe Except:

2 Cups of Red Pepper Flakes for Ancho Chilies
1 Cup Paprika for Color

Need to find a Supply of Beef Middle Casing so I can do some traditional stuff.
Check out this Traditional Smokehouse in Louisana. http://www.cajunsausage.com/ProductDescriptions.htm

Anyhoo. We are off to our friend Roses to eat and relax.

WOW!!! Winter In Alaska

Yep! Winter is here. It has been snowing for the last couple of days. Contrary to what the weather reports say. Highs have been in the low thirties and lows have been in the teens. Most people are saying " Wow your not cold?" Nope! The girls still have to get used to wearing hats and gloves outside. I personally just dress in layers. I am SMRT Smart. We wear glove and Hats and Fleeces (Thanks Gamma Sue and Granpa Jerry). The Girls LOVE there Jackets( Thanks Unc Ken, Auntie Robin and Cuz Mhari).

I am in Hockey Nirvana. I know I am probably the last one to know this. But I got to listen to the Sabres play Islanders online Saturday. Great Game though they lost. I also Caught the Cannuck Game. They won in OT. Going to try to catch some of the Avs games to online. Avs Did win on Sunday by a Whopping 4 goals in the third period 6-2 over the Sharks.

Sydney is quite the little Sous Chef. She helps me with every meal we cook. She scrubs potatoes to help me make our oven fries and helped me make our Super Secret Moose Loaf Recipe. One of the gals at work Deb gave us 50# of moose to us. All steaks and some trim for ground. they had gotten it and did not like the flavor. Yummy for us. After giving a third of it away to our dishgal Jess. We actually got it in our freezer. 4-6 Months of meat? Yep super cool.

In other news. We are officially Alaskans now. Yesterday my Buddy Jerms and I winterized the trailblazer. So all that is left is to regulate the antifreeze and we will be set for winter.

Fall In Alaska ?

Yes Folks it is true. There is a Fall In Alaska. It is Just Beautiful. The Hillsides are ablaze with the Aspen and Alder. The Moose and Hunters abound. Two guys that came into the diner said They floated 120 Miles of the Yukon River and got Three Caribou and a Moose. No that is Not Poaching. People need to remember that Moose and Caribou are a Major food source in Alaska. Because of the cost of some good Like beef (2.79 for Ground on sale) People use the natural Resources to live on.

Finding Home

Have you ever been at a place and found that moment Life and Love Meet. Alaska Is that place for me. The more I travel around this state the more I love it. Though As many people have pointed out I am a yet to experience winter here. I say bring it on. People at the diner I talk to say that is a great attitude. I say that is the only attitude I can have. People Have many misconception about up here.
  1. There is more than 4 weeks of summer. Try 12 weeks.
  2. Good and service are only slightly more than the Seattle Area. Gas has stayed around 2.70 - 2.89 pert Gallon
  3. The Average snowfall is around 4 feet Per year. It just Stays.
  4. It Does get to -45 Degree in January Febuary and March
  5. There is a Spring and fall Season.
  6. You can get fresh vegetables up here.
  7. There is No State Income tax. Though Car tabs and other fees are Higher.
  8. People Tend to be very community oriented . But Like to keep to themselves.
  9. Alot of people do live subsistently(Hunting Fishing and Farming). But I would say no more that 1/3 of the people.
  10. Time is different up here. People look at seasons rather than months. Winter is a time getting ready for summer and Summer is used to get Ready for Winter.

I love the fact that we are in a Place where animal population are greater than People. No traffic Jams. The pace is constant Not Hurried. It is Home

In all things, excellence has no competition -Randy Jones

John R. Jones John Randolph Jones, 64, joined his Father in heaven on July 10, 2007.

Randy was born in Myrtle Beach, S.C. while his father was in the Army during World War II. Randy lived an amazing life. He was raised in Longview, Wash., and began his restaurant career at age 14.

Upon leaving the Navy in 1965 as a cryptologist, he followed his dream in the Canadian Pacific Hotel chain learning culinary skills long before culinary schools were popular.

Randy later took a chef's position at Port Ludlow Resort in Washington where he met his future and adventurous wife, Colleen Coulter, of Irondale, Wash. Randy invited his girlfriend to Alaska and promptly proposed when she departed the plane in Juneau. They married in Auke Bay in 1976.

Yancey Derringer Restaurant in Juneau was his first restaurant in Alaska and became Alaska's standard in culinary cuisine. He also opened the Great Alaskan Sandwich Co. in Juneau. Mentoring young persons in the culinary skills was Randy's forte. During this time, they had two sons - Brian and Brad. He also owned Jones & Jones, Ltd., a fine china and crystal shop.

In 1985 Randy moved his family to Washington where he opened Pellagrino's Italian Restaurant in Sequim. This restaurant was later moved to Silverdale, Wash., and named CafÉ Milano. "In all things, excellence has no competition," was Randy's motto. When the restaurant closed, Randy became chief steward on some of the largest fish processors in the Bering Sea and at fish processing camps around Alaska.

Because he loved Alaska, the family moved to Fairbanks and in 1999 he opened 2 Geeks Computers.

Having one last dream, Randy created, designed and opened Harley's Diner Motorcycle Cafe in March 2007. Randy's dream for Harley's Diner will remain strong as a family business. His prized meatloaf will forever be remembered and eaten by all.

Randy's hobbies included cooking, riding motorcycles with his wife, Colleen, fishing and being host to his many friends. His storytelling is renowned as being the best in the business.

Truly his family and friends will miss him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas Jones; and sister, Merrie Rieke.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen and sons, Brian and Bradford, as well as Sean from a previous marriage; grandchild, Riley; mother, Betty Jayne Jones of Tucson, Ariz.; brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Linda Jones of Arizona; sisters and brothers-in-law, Candice and Robert Moe of Virginia and Suzie and Michael Curtis of Japan; and aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews in the Lower 48.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations may be made to a scholarship fund for UAF culinary art students in the name of Randy Jones at Alaska USA Federal Credit Union.

A celebration of life will be held at 4:30 p.m., Monday, July 16, at Friends Community Church, 1485 30th Ave.

Pastor Darryl Carnley of North Pole Worship Center will officiate. A reception will follow. Please bring written memories for the family to collect.

Condolences may be sent to Colleen Jones, 910 College Road, Fairbanks, AK 99701.

Crash claims life of Randy Jones, popular N. Pole businessman
By Eric Lidji
elidji@newsminer.com
Published July 12, 2007

Randy Jones — devoted family man, expertly trained chef, man of the people and avid motorcycle enthusiast — died Tuesday night after a motorcycle accident at the intersection of University Avenue and the Johansen Expressway.

He was 64.

Jones became known around the Interior for two successful business ventures. In January 2000, he founded the Fairbanks computer store Two Geeks, now known as Geek City Electronics, and this spring he opened the distinctive Harley’s Diner MC in North Pole.

Jones died after a collision with his wife, Colleen, who had been riding on a motorcycle along side him. Colleen Jones is receiving treatment at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

The two were returning from dinner with friends.

Food and friends both played an important role in Jones’ life, his youngest son, Brad, said.

“He loved cooking anything and everything, as long as there were people to eat it,” Brad Jones said.

Born in Virginia and raised in Washington state, Randy Jones traveled around the country in his youth by nature of his military upbringing. He began a cooking career at 14, and over the following four decades became one of the last of a breed of students to complete a vigorous training and apprenticeship program that had him working under head chefs at four and five star hotels.

Randy came to Alaska in the 1970s to begin restaurant consulting work in Juneau and eventually opened Yancey Derringer’s, a popular restaurant along the wharf.

Randy and Colleen Jones married in December 1976 and had two boys, Brian, 28, and Brad, 25. The Joneses left the state in the mid-1980s, but returned to Alaska a decade later when Jones continued his restaurant consulting career in the Denali area.

Doctor’s orders to stay off his feet and a personal fascination with computers lead Jones in 2000 to start Two Geeks, named in anticipation of running the shop with Brad, who graduated from high school that year. Randy took classes at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to learn more about the computer world and envisioned the store as a locally owned business with a huge retail capacity.

“He wanted to show people that a computer store could be more than a little hole in the wall. That it could be a big venture,” Brad Jones said. “He always thought big.”

Jones grew up in a church family, but returned to the faith more fervently in adulthood, according to Darryl Carnley, pastor of the North Pole Worship Center where Jones attended services.

Jones would often call Carnley during the week to contemplate or discuss elements of the weekly sermon. Jones saw church as another avenue toward building community, Carnley said.

“Community to him meant that no matter what stage of life you’re in … you felt you were needed,” Carnley said. “Everyone had equal access.”

That attitude is what fueled Jones’ love of motorcycles, according to Thomas McGhee, who owns Cherokee Riders and taught Jones how to ride.

“Motorcycling is an uncommon world of camaraderie. Motorcycling brings people together on the street, in the world,” McGhee said. “That’s what Randy stood for; he stood for that brotherhood.”

Jones helped Enola Bowers and her husband, Robert, start the local chapter of the Christian Motorcyclists Association, the Arctic Servants No. 886, and frequently went on rides around the state wearing a black leather vest with a yellow cross patched over his heart.

“Randy was a lot of different personalities rolled into one big ball of human vitality,” Enola Bowers said. “He was the most successful entrepreneurial businessperson I ever met, and he was the brother who would give you the shirt off of his back.”

The Bowers spent part of the day on Wednesday designing a special patch to help fellow riders memorialize Jones.

Jones’ various passions united this spring with the opening of Harley’s Diner MC along the Richardson Highway.

The restaurant combines his love of food, friends and motorcycles, and showcases Jones’ meticulous attention to detail.

In addition to the shiny chrome exterior and checkered black and white floors, Jones spent six months combing through catalogues to find all of the accouterments that decorate the walls inside. Over the months spent planning the restaurant and its menu, Jones invited friends over for dinner parties where he presented test batches of meat loaf, beans and biscuits.

Jones’ friends and family said that in the few months the diner has been open, Jones could always be found sitting with customers, talking with friends and even inviting his competition over for a meal.

In Memorium For Randy

Tonight Jess Called Me From work to tell me that our owner Randy Jones was in a Fatal Motorcycle Accident. I did not know Randy For long, But in that time he was a mentor and Most of all a friend. Sean The chef said that the diner will continue on. It is a Memorial to Randy's Legacy. My words cannot express the greif I feel. For when a connection is made with a person well. You Just Know.

Yay For Jason!

So as some of you may know Jessica has been working at Harley's Diner here in North Pole just shy of a month now. Well, Last Saturday Jason started working there as the new breakfast/lunch cook.(The diner is only a few months old and they hadn't been doing breakfast yet, Just lunch and dinner). Anyway......

They recognized Jason's skills and he has already been promoted! So Jason is the new sous chef at the diner. How cool is that? They had one at the diner all ready, but thought Jason would be better suited for it.So the basically switched places. So he is back in management again and salaried as well. But it is slightly more money then he was making.(Plus since we don't have to drive into town everyday to work, we are using way, way less gas- Another bonus) He had only been there a week!
